Why it’s Important to Change Your Furnace Filter: Goettl Video
Changing your furnace filter regularly is crucial for maintaining the efficiency and longevity of your HVAC system. In this article, we’ll explore the key points discussed in a video by Eric Guyton, one of our Goettl master HVAC technicians with over 15 years of experience. Do you need to change your furnace filter? Watch the above video to find out:
Why Change Your Furnace Filter?
Eric explains in the video that furnace filters primarily protect the HVAC system’s delicate components from contaminants, not just ensure your home’s indoor air quality. In the rest of this article, we will cover exactly why you need a filter replacement every three months or less. Trust us… your heating and cooling system will thank you.
Consequences of a Dirty Filter
Clogged filters can greatly reduce air flow, making your system work harder and less efficiently, which can lead to damage and inconsistent heating/cooling. You may even notice some hot or cold spots in your house, or maybe you hear a whistling sound coming from your intake vent–both of these indicate that it is time to change the filter.
There are Health Implications Too
Dirty filters fail to trap contaminants, spreading allergens and potentially causing allergy symptoms, respiratory issues, irritations (not to mention dirty surfaces) for the entire family–including pets. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends changing your furnace filter at least once every three months. However, you may need to replace your filter more frequently during periods of heavy use.
Financial Reasons to Change Furnace Filters
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, replacing a dirty air filter with a clean one can reduce your heating and cooling system’s energy usage by 5 – 15%. And it goes without saying that replacing your air filter can extend the life of your furnace and cut down on the need for potentially expensive furnace maintenance or repair calls. But this is a good time to remind you about our AC Rejuuuvenation®–it is way more than an Air Conditioning tune up.
When to Change Your Air Filter?
Factors include household size, region of the country, pets, and the type of filter you use. Be sure to check your air filter on a regular basis and be sure to replace them when they are fully covered in contaminants. How often should you change your home’s air filter? Experts all agree, you should change your filter every one to three months.
How to Check and Replace Your Furnace Filter
- Locate the Filter: Identify where your air conditioner filter (HVAC unit) is located.
- Turn Off the HVAC System: Ensure safety by turning off the system before inspecting the filter.
- Remove the Filter: Carefully remove the old filter.
- Inspect the Filter: Check for dust and debris. If it’s fully coated, the filter needs to be replaced.
- Install the New Filter: Insert a new clean air filter, making sure it fits properly.
- Turn the System Back On: Restart your HVAC system and ensure it’s functioning correctly.
What is the Difference Between Replacement Filters?
The efficiency of any replacement filter boils down to it’s MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values) rating. It speaks to a filter’s ability to capture larger particles between 0.3 and 10 microns (µm). The MERV rating is derived from a test method developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) back in 1987. A clean filter has a MERV score between 0-20, but a good furnace filter should have a score somewhere between 8-13.
What about the Shape of the Filter? Why are Pleated Filters Better?
Pleated air filters are generally more effective at capturing and retaining airborne particles and contaminants compared to non-pleated filters. The pleats and/or waffle patterns create a larger surface area for trapping all those particles, resulting in better filtration efficiency and better air flow.
Ready to Stop Guessing When to Change Your Filters?
If your to-do list is already long enough, consider our Smart Sadie maintenance program. Sensors help detect and prevent HVAC and plumbing problems, ensuring worry-free performance for your heating, air conditioning, and water heater systems. These sensors measure airflow to determine the health of your filters and will let you know when it’s time to change them.
