How to Shut Off Your Water Heater

Need help shutting off your water heater?

Follow these easy steps for either Gas or Electric Water Heaters:

Gas Water Heaters

  1. Turn off the gas using the valve located on your water. Just turn the valve clockwise to the OFF position.
  2. Shut off the water supply to the water heater.

Electric Water Heaters

  1. Using your home’s electrical panel, find the breaker marked
    “Water Heater” and click it to the OFF position.
    • If you’re not sure which breaker is connected to your Water Heater, you can turn the whole panel off.
  2. Shut off the water supply to the water heater.

  1. If your water heater is leaking and there is no water valve, you may need to turn off your water supply at the water meter.
  2. Make sure to unplug any accessories you find around your water heater, such as an electric recirculating pump.
