Types of Water Softeners
Salt-Based Ion Exchange Softeners
Using salt-based softeners is one solution for Austin’s high levels of calcium, magnesium, and sediments from the Colorado River. These hard mineral ions are simply
exchanged for potassium, sodium, or other soft ions. While very effective, salt-based softeners can sometimes be water-intensive, and less efficient that other models.
Reverse Osmosis – Salt-Free Conditioners
If you’re looking for a solution to hard water without salt, Goettl’s reverse osmosis system eliminates hard water problems and keeps beneficial minerals in place. In Austin, a great deal of the water in the “live music capital of the world” is sourced directly from the Edwards aquifer, a source especially rich in limestone deposits. This makes reverse osmosis an excellent choice for the region, as this type of water softening system can eliminate up to 99% of dissolved minerals, contaminants, and impurities.
Reverse Osmosis works by using a semi-permeable membrane that prevents scale buildup in your pipes. Although some trace minerals may remain on dishes and utensils in the dishwasher, this type of system produces both pure drinking water and improved water quality overall.
Dual-Tank Softeners
If access to soft water at all times is important, a dual-tank water softener fits the bill. This type of water softening system features two resin tanks and one salt tank, which in combination provide a continuous soft water supply. If one tank reaches capacity, the system can then switch automatically to the other.
