Causes of Low Air Flow in Your Furnace
Furnaces are “forced-air” systems: they distribute the heat created in the furnace’s cabinet through ductwork using an air handler. Your furnace’s burners, gas jets, heating elements, and heat exchangers can work perfectly—but without proper airflow, the heat they generate will not reach you. When you discover low airflow coming from your house’s vents, it points toward a possibly serious problem with the furnace.
There are a number of potential causes for a drop in furnace airflow. The list below will give you some diagnostic help discovering what may be causing the problem.
3 Possible Causes of Reduced Airflow From a Furnace
- Clogged air filter: The air filter installed in the furnace’s intake prevents debris from entering the cabinet. It needs to be changed once a month during the height of the heating season, or else the filter will become clogged with dust and dirt and begin to choke off the airflow into the furnace. (A clogged filter can cause other trouble as well, so make sure you have it changed on schedule.)
- Breaks in the ductwork: The sealed ductwork maintains the pressure of the air as it travels from the furnace to the vents. If breaks or gaps appear in the ducts, they will cause the air to escape and air pressure to drop. This will also allow an infiltration of dust into the ducts and a loss of heat. If you notice a musty odor along with the reduced airflow, then duct breaks are a probable cause. You will need professional duct repair and sealing.
- Broken air handler: The air handler of the furnace contains the blower and motors that send the air through the furnace for heat exchange and then into the ventilation system. Damaged or broken motors, bent fan blades, cracked fan belts, and electrical faults can all contribute to an air handler than can’t work at its regular level. The components will need repairs, or the whole air handler may require replacement.

Was very pleased with Goettl and Matthew Lopez. They came into our home and looked at our system and let us know what was wrong with it. They were not pushy or demanding, but opposite they were caring. We had several techs come to our house to fix our issues but they did not fix it. Matthew showed his frustration because they did not fix our issues. Matthew explained what needed to be done to make our unit run more efficient. We thank him for his expertise. Will use them again.

The gentleman that arrived for the assessment and repair of my AC (Mr. Jorge Gutierrez) was outstanding. His Customer Service was top notch, beyond just being friendly. He explained everything that he was doing and before conducting any tests, he would explain what is ideal and what are the limits regarding what he was looking at. Beyond my initial call, I had some follow up questions which he was more than happy to answer and explain. Upon further review, there were some additional issues found (not the “go in for oil change, now you need a new transmission” type of issue), but which helped to clarify the situation and for which he provided several suggestions on how we could move forward. I am an extremely cheap person but my family’s health and well being is first and foremost. And when you’ve got two girls and a wife who absolutely hate the heat (and here in Texas we get plenty of that), their happiness is my happiness (in more ways than one). So with Mr. Gutierrez’ explanations and suggestions in front of me, I made a decision which despite the cost, I feel comfortable and satisfied with. I’ve got his Contact info as well as his Supervisor (Carlos), so if anything comes up in the future or if there’s additional projects I’d like to have done in my home, I’ll definitely be requesting him personally.

I was scared and totally unprepared for this fast escalating water leak. It was terrifying. Ryan and Kaelen came and patiently and thoroughly explained what was happening. What was the procedure to locate the issue, what they would need to do to assess and repair the issue and as they exposed the problem they showed me what was happening each time I came out. They educated me fully so I will be able to handle any future issues confidently. They confirmed the leak was resolved and showed me how to use the new turn off if needed in the future. Because we still had an issue with a leak that was not coming from the AC, Peter was able to get another member of the Goettl team to come out and help diagnose that issue! Overall great experience with Goettl, so far! Hopefully the leak will be found soon!

Goettl sent Ryan to fix my clogged drain. He arrived. On time and cleared my drain quickly. Advised me of a break that was In the cities right-of-way. And sent a video confirming his findings. All for less than $100. Glad I chose Goettl!

Had Jesus come out and inspect my AC unit after it stopped working and he really hit the mark on creating a friendly professional environment and helped me through this stressful process and to choose the correct path that worked best for me. Everyone from the technicians to the crew who came out and installed my new unit were absolutely incredible and left no trace of them being here working. Darren guerra was great, gave us several options and explained in full detail what needed to be done. Very neat and clean in his work. And finished the job in a timely manner. Very happy overall with everything from start to finish. I did think the price was a little high though but considering it was getting late and didn't have much options.

We were hearing hammering between the walls. Tyler came out to my home to perform an evaluation. After doing several tests he quickly found the issue. We discussed several options. I ultimately opted to have the problem fixed to avoid damage to other appliances. He completed the work in a timely manner.
Peter helped a lot with explaining the root cause of our AC unit not functioning as well as it should be, and explaining why he recommended the fix/parts that he did. Took plenty of time to troubleshoot what was actually going on as opposed to just treating the symptoms, and explained in an easy-to-understand way what he found and how to fix it. He also gave good advice about simple DIY maintenance we can do moving forward to keep the system healthy! Goettl as a whole was very easy to work with and I was able to book an appointment as early as the day following my phone call. Great service from start to finish!
