GOETTL SUPPORTS COLON CANCER PATIENTS WITH SPONSORSHIP OF “GET YOUR REAR IN GEAR” 5K
LAS VEGAS, NV, April 22, 2024 – Goettl Air Conditioning & Plumbing is proud to announce its role as a Presenting Sponsor of this year’s Get Your Rear in Gear 5K in Las Vegas. Developed by the Colon Cancer Coalition, the event raises money to help remove barriers to screening for under and uninsured people, educate the public about early detection and screening, reduce financial burdens for patients, and fund research to help fight and end colon cancer. The event will be held Saturday, April 27 at Cornerstone Park, 1600 Wigwam Parkway in Henderson.
“We are incredibly proud to have such a large role in this year’s event. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, yet the chance of surviving colon cancer goes up with early detection and treatment. Unfortunately only 40 percent of colon cancers are found in the early stages, largely due to the lack of access to screening. The more we can draw awareness to the importance of screening, the more lives we’ll save,” says Goettl associate and colon cancer survivor, Michelle Horvath.
“We’re excited that Goettl has joined us in making this year’s Rear in Gear event a success. They have shown enthusiasm and commitment from the start and we are happy to be working with them to raise awareness in our community. Events like these give patients, survivors, caregivers, and other loved ones the chance to connect with others living the shared experience of a colorectal cancer diagnosis while helping create awareness for this very treatable disease,” says Emily Dzieweczynski, Colon Cancer Coalition.
“I was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2022, just days before my 50th birthday,” says Horvath. “For two years before my diagnosis, I had symptoms that my doctors brushed off. Having benefited from colon cancer research, I know firsthand the difference the Colon Cancer Coalition is making in the everyday lives of those who battle this disease. I can’t wait to participate in this 5K with dozens of my Goettl colleagues, feeling the support from them and their families.”
COLON CANCER FACTS
- 1 in 24 Americans will be diagnosed with colon or rectal (colorectal) cancer during their lifetime.
- 51% of adults 50-54 have not been screened.
- Colonoscopy screening can prevent colorectal cancer.
- Colorectal cancer is now the most common cause of cancer death in men younger than 50.
- 1 in 5 colorectal cancer patients are 20-54 years old.
- In 2021, the recommended age for routine cancer screenings was lowered from 50 to 45.
