How to Prepare Your AC System for Warmer Weather
It’s starting to heat up and homeowners are already thinking about how best to prepare their AC system or evaporative cooler for warmer weather. It’s an important consideration. After all, the cooling season lasts for more than a third of the year in this area, and ensuring that you stay cool all summer long means repairing and maintaining your cooling system. In this post, we’d like to give you some ideas about this preparation.
- Schedule an air conditioning tune-up. Not only is this the best way to prepare your system for the long cooling season, it can also help to improve the energy efficiency of your system and thereby reduce your energy costs. A comprehensive inspection and cleaning will look for any dust and debris that has built up inside your indoor and outdoor units, as well as any mold or water leaks in your evaporative cooler. It will also give you the peace of mind that comes with professional care.
- Clean your air filter. The cleanliness of your AC air filter is critical not only to the indoor air quality, but also to the energy efficiency of your cooling system. A dirty or clogged air filter can dramatically reduce the amount of cool air passing through your system, thus making the system that much harder. It can also lead to frozen coils and condensation problems.
- Clean the drain pipe. Your evaporative cooler has a drain pipe that allows condensation to move outside of the unit and into a drainage system. It’s important to check this frequently during the cooling season, because it can lead to water leaks.
- System flush. To ensure that mold and other sediment do not buildup inside your evaporative cooler, be sure and flush the system frequently. Doing so allows your evaporative cooler to be prepared for the increased strain that comes with warmer weather.
