What Is Involved in Duct Testing?

You may not be aware of how important your home’s network of ducts is. It’s responsible for bringing conditioned air from your heater and air conditioner into the rooms throughout your house, and it also circulates air through the intake vents and into the HVAC system. In order to do its job effectively, the ventilation system must remain in excellent condition with an airtight seal. If this seal develops leaks because of breaks, holes, corrosion, and loose connections, it will cause a plunge in air pressure that will severely affect your home’s comfort. It will also allow contamination to enter the ventilation system, and this will damage your indoor air quality.

Through duct testing you can find out about the integrity of your home’s ductwork. Professionals will come to your house and perform tests that will locate where your ducts have air leaks that are lowering efficiency and endangering your air. After duct testing is finished, the experts will know exactly what needs repairs and how to take care of those repairs.

Here’s what happens during duct testing

Duct testing involves sealing off an entire ventilation system and then pressurizing it in order to determine how airtight it is. The technicians determine how much air pressure is escaping from the ductwork and then trace down the locations so they can repair or seal them.

The first step in duct testing is to close off all the vents and registers into your home so that the only place air pressure can escape is through leaks along the ducts. A vacuum is attached to the ductwork near the HVAC unit and the whole ventilation system is put under pressure. Using a duct leak tester, the technicians learn how much pressure is escaping from the ventilation system, and this gives them a sense of the scope of the problem.

Once they have determined the total leakage in the ventilation system, the technicians move across the ducts with a pressure sensor to pinpoint the actual leaks and measure how much they air they are losing. Based on these findings, the technicians will recommend the work necessary to make the ductwork airtight once more. It can involve mastic sealing, metallic tape, or sometimes full duct replacements.

Add in personability, reasonability, and hard work and I could be happier.

Goettl is not cheap, although their service visit is very inexpensive, their quotes are almost always considerably higher. The service from an employee like Gilbert, however, is the sole reason why I would even consider entertaining a higher cost.

I run an Airbnb with 5 rooms in my home, and my tankless water heater suddenly went out. In my case, this was an emergency, especially with the weather getting colder. Goettl ensured that a technician arrived within a few hours, and Juan Gil showed up in good spirits and ready to solve the puzzle.

Like most people, I typically search for the cheapest service I can find, and I end up having other plumbers come out to check out issues with my tankless water heater, who run their mouths, upsell parts (that don't seem to be causing the problem), and generally don't really know enough about tankless water heaters. This time, I decided to go with an experienced company with a good reputation, and I am glad that I did - Goettl's prices are very reasonable and worth the service they provide.

Juan, was very knowledgeable, patient, and persistent. Even better, he was careful and humble enough to acknowledge that he didn't know everything and checked with the manufacturer at every step. Juan spent a great deal of time helping me diagnose the problem (which always seems impossible to ascertain quickly with machines like tankless water heaters), and went above and beyond to ensure that my guests and I had hot water tonight.

Juan never got frustrated; he handled everything carefully and made sure to clean up after himself when he was done. If I can have Juan take care of all of my plumbing or AC issues in the future, I will. And if you're reading reviews to decide whether to call Goettl for your issue, I would encourage you to trust their service and experience. My experience with Juan was definitely memorable.

We now have hot water again. Can I get a "hell yeah"?

And since I have their membership, I was told there would be no trip charge Clayton Purvis was such an angel. Today, Rodell did a thorough clean-out of our bathroom sink drains, including sending the camera down to check for build up out to the main connection to the sewer. This was included in our membership with no extra charge. He and his partner also found the mystery leak in the guest bathroom toilet and replaced the guts and seals. The thing I liked the best was his advice about maintenance and how that little hole in the sink is a real drain that also needs flushing out by letting the sink fill up periodically. We ordered a new refrigerator from Lowe’s. When they delivered it, they said they could not install the water line. We were not familiar with plumbers so we asked our neighbor who did the plumbing in his new shower. He said Goettl and he was very happy with the results. I called them they sent out a wonderful servicemen, Gerardo Gonzalez. The builders had used 3/8” pipes and Lowe’s seemed to only have 1/4” connectors. Gerardo solved our problem and we had to get Lowe’s out again the next day to finish the install. We highly recommend Goettl and appreciate the caliber of their staff!

Installation day was when they said it would be. They scheduled the building permit, attended the inspection, and it was on time. We called on a Saturday and thankfully Christian Acosta was the one on call to help us out. Had a gas line in my home that needed repair. Goettl was quick to send a technician that night even though it was well past business hours. Chris came over and gave us a quote. He made sure we knew our payment options and thoroughly explained what the repair was going to be like and the steps we needed to take with the gas company.
