Problems Unique to Heat Pump Compressors
Heat pumps are an exceptional way to receive year-round comfort in the hot climate of Southern Arizona. A heat pump works in a similar way to an air conditioner, except it can reverse the direction of heat exchange so that as well as removing heat from inside a home, it can also bring heat into a home from the outside. Since Southern Arizona has very mild winters, heat pumps encounter few problems removing sufficient heat from the ambient air outside to warm up a home.
In most ways, heat pumps work the same as air conditioners. However, there are a few key differences between them, such as in the compressors. If your heat pump starts to encounter trouble providing you the level of comfort you require, the trouble may lay in the compressor.
Heat pump compressor issues
The main thing to keep in mind with a heat pump compressor is that it works more often than an air conditioning compressor. Whether in heating or cooling mode, a heat pump’s compressor is operating. And because a heat pump is expected to work during cooler temperatures than an air conditioner, it has some important differences to make sure the refrigerant and other liquids flow correctly.
A heat pump’s compressor has a crankcase heater to vaporize any liquid refrigerant that may enter the compressor between cycles. The heater also warms up the oil in the compressor so that it will be able to circulate when the outdoor temperature is lower. If the crankcase heater breaks down, it will create inefficient performance when the heat pump is in heating mode.
A heat pump uses less refrigerant when in heating mode than cooling mode, and to accommodate this a device called a suction line accumulator is attached to the compressor. The accumulator is designed to keep the unneeded refrigerant from causing liquid slugging, which is when large amounts of refrigerant flood back into the compressor, often leading to the compressor failing.
These differences between air conditioner and heat pump compressors are one of the reasons you must always rely on professional repair technicians whenever your heat pump starts to act up. An amateur with some knowledge of refrigeration systems will rarely be prepared to deal with liquid slugging, faulty accumulators, and broken crankcase heaters. Samuel arrived about 8:15 on 9/2 to give my A/C unit its first rejuvenation (y'all installed it July 2022). He replaced the old filter with the one I had bought last year that wasn't needed when the new unit was installed. Samuel tested the temperature coming from some of the vents and said my A/C is running fine and that you would be contacting me later to schedule an appointment for the heating. On 7/26 Christian installed my new A/C unit and a new thermostat. He showed me how to use it and left the manual. Everyone at Goettl was so helpful with this situation and got my A/C replaced and running in just two days!
On 3/9/2024 Jesse came to my house for the heater rejuvenation and to install the Sadie Smart monitor. He was very thorough in explaining how the Smart system works and where he had placed all of the sensors. I had a new filter so he replaced the old one. He also told me that my plan covers filters and I just pay for shipping; I'll remember that when I need a new filter.
On 1/11/25 Jesus came to my house for the annual heater rejuvenation and said my unit is in good shape and running well. I had bought 2 filters before the service in March 2024, one was installed then. Jesus installed the one I had on hand and reminded me that my plan covers filters. He was also thorough in going over the readings he had taken.
On 5/3/25 Michael came to my house for the annual plumbing inspection provided with my Sadie Guard Dog Protection. My water heater is about 7 years old and Michael answered my questions about replacing it. He also told me that Goettl could remove the old one and install new one if I found one more in my budget somewhere else. He even told me the estimated install cost to help with my budgeting.

We recently had both of our HVAC systems replaced. During that install, the needed to create bigger hole at our attic entrance in order to take the old units out and install the new units. My A/C stopped working in the Texas heat. Luckily, I was a member of their maintenance program which is very reasonably priced! Tech stopped by first thing the next morning. Turned out my outside A/C circuit breaker had tripped presumably due to age or overheating. We ordered a new refrigerator from Lowe’s. When they delivered it, they said they could not install the water line. We were not familiar with plumbers so we asked our neighbor who did the plumbing in his new shower. He said Goettl and he was very happy with the results. I called them they sent out a wonderful servicemen, Gerardo Gonzalez. The builders had used 3/8” pipes and Lowe’s seemed to only have 1/4” connectors. Gerardo solved our problem and we had to get Lowe’s out again the next day to finish the install. We highly recommend Goettl and appreciate the caliber of their staff!

Michael provided excellent services, over 2 days. On the first day, he repaired an irrigation leak, cleared a kitchen drain, replaced a garbage disposal and a kitchen faucet. Pablo arrived in the window that was promised. He was very efficient when something wasn’t working quite right. He found another workaround to inspect my heating system. He cleaned off the firing point with sandpaper as I’ve seen many other technicians. Do he inspected everything took pictures of everything and sent the pictures to me. He asked if I would be interested in a price on a new system. I told him not at this time there was no hard sell. My system is now 21 years old. I plan to replace the heater and air conditioner, but not for another few years. I found four seasons to be excellent and Goettl to be just as good.

We called on a Saturday and thankfully Christian Acosta was the one on call to help us out. Company sent us Stanley to help with a water line for our refrigerator. Had several problems but Stanley was very knowledgeable and informed us of all decisions and you could tell he just lived his job. It was a pricey fix and I respected Stanley more for being situationally aware that my wife and I needed to talk in private. Russ Sapp came yesterday 8/18/25. He was prompt, very courteous, explained what he was doing with taking pictures of our AC unit and what areas of the AC unit needed attention. He didn’t rush. He spent time answering our many questions. He gave us options and gave us price quotes on the spot for each service we had asked about or that he suggested. He had a sense of humor as I said to him “I take it Sadie approved of you?” I took that from the commercials saying if Sadie doesn’t like the person, they’re not hired. I’d ask for Russ again. We have had Goettl of Tucson service for about a year and thank goodness we had them to call when our AC failed and had a condensation leak in the attic . Goettl sent ROBERT out right away. He did a thorough inspection and informed us of what we already felt we needed to do with our old system. He sat down with me and went through the pros and cons of repairing the old vs replacement. He explained everything about a new Goettl system. From all the benefits, to the great warranties to the peace of mind we’d have not having to worry what would and could happen next to the old system. He was friendly, thoughtful and professional. Bobby Smith is great at explaining the options I have with my AC and Heater. He also let me know about the maintenance plan which is going to be great for me so I can always keep up to date with the AC and the heater. Also I didn't know that you did plumbing and he said I could get plumbing work done too so I am going to do that right away. I liked the photos that were taken to explain the situation on where I am at with the unit. All in all it was the best technician experience I have had since becoming a home owner in 2010. I would highly recommend Geottl and Bobby to anyone because of getting things right the first time, going out of his way to help, following up and keeping promises, and great product and technical knowledge. I'm not super informed on my home machines so it is comforting to be in good hands.
