What Are Dual Fuel AC Systems?

Southern Arizona routinely registers the hottest temperatures in the continental U.S. during the summer. Life in Tucson requires an effective air conditioning system to cool down the inside of your home and defend it against the blistering heat outside. It’s important that you choose an AC with the right power level to make summer comfortable.

However, Southern Arizona has its winter season as well, with cool temperatures that require a home heater for comfort. Dual Fuel AC Systems, a.k.a. Hybrid Heat Pumps

Referring to a dual fuel system as “air conditioning” is a touch misleading. These systems are actually heat pumps, able to work as air conditioners and heaters. But since they operate in the same way as an air conditioner—moving heat from indoors and placing it outdoors—they don’t seem much different from a regular air conditioner when they run in the summer.

It’s the heating side that operates a bit differently. Heat pumps are capable of providing warmth by reversing the direction they move heat. In AC mode, heat goes from inside to outside; in heating mode, heat goes from outside to inside.

But where the cooling mode of a heat pump is efficient at maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures no matter how hot the outside weather grows, the heating mode can sometimes struggle with low temperatures, when the system has trouble extracting sufficient heat from the outside air. To compensate for this loss, hybrid heat pumps use a back-up heating system that runs on a separate fuel supply (usually natural gas). This back-up heater activates automatically when it detects that the heat pump cannot keep up with the lower temperatures.

With a hybrid heat pump, you’ll have both cooling and heating without needing to worry about a loss in efficiency. The heating mode on a heat pump is much more energy-efficient than a furnace or boiler, and you will only need to use the back-up system occasionally. Heat pumps are ideal year-round comfort solutions for Southern Arizona.

It was time for my furnace rejuvenation and fortunately it was a cool enough day to turn the heater on for the first time. He was prompt, friendly and knew his stuff. He took his time checking things out and made sure I didn't have any questions or issues before he left. Because I have allergies and pets, he did tell me about an air purification system that I might want to consider in the future, which I appreciated. Would definitely recommend him and Goettl.

Edit 12/23/2022: previously I've used them for plumbing but today I used their AC/Heating service. My poor system decided it was time to go on one of our coldest nights. Called very very early and had someone out that morning to triage what needed to be done (Billy) and then Raymond and Manny G came out and installed my new unit and a new thermostat. Today, Rodell did a thorough clean-out of our bathroom sink drains, including sending the camera down to check for build up out to the main connection to the sewer. This was included in our membership with no extra charge. He and his partner also found the mystery leak in the guest bathroom toilet and replaced the guts and seals. The thing I liked the best was his advice about maintenance and how that little hole in the sink is a real drain that also needs flushing out by letting the sink fill up periodically. Given the extent of the work I need to get multiple quotes and some companies insist on expensive trip charges (one up to $500) to have a “specialist” assess before providing a quote for the work.

I requested a plumbing drain inspection from Goettl. Service rep arrived introduced him self and went quickly to work. He was courteous and polite. He proceeded to inspect my plumbing and Drains. Shortly after he visited my hot water room he requested be to accompany him to observe there was a stream of water coming out of thr drain pan. He reviewed with me some of the items associated with my current installation that might be best updated and replaced. He gave me an estimate and we should. Hands and he proceeded to remove and replace my hot water heater. The job was completed and tested tan a timely manner and he left the area in a clean and organized manner. We ordered a new refrigerator from Lowe’s. When they delivered it, they said they could not install the water line. We were not familiar with plumbers so we asked our neighbor who did the plumbing in his new shower. He said Goettl and he was very happy with the results. I called them they sent out a wonderful servicemen, Gerardo Gonzalez. The builders had used 3/8” pipes and Lowe’s seemed to only have 1/4” connectors. Gerardo solved our problem and we had to get Lowe’s out again the next day to finish the install. We highly recommend Goettl and appreciate the caliber of their staff!

This is how a service/install company should work. Price was exactly as quoted and was very fair, comparing to multiple others. They never tried to add on extras like all the others did. Installation day was when they said it would be. They scheduled the building permit, attended the inspection, and it was on time. We have been Sadi club members for years. The service is excellent from the customer service representatives that answer the phone to the individual technicians that come out to your home. Two years ago we replaced our AC unit and went with a Goettl installation after years of having them maintain our older unit.
This past week our service technician was Andrew Morgan and he is such a friendly, knowledgeable, and skilled technician. He spent time making sure the job was done correctly and he explained it in terms that I could understand. We called on a Saturday and thankfully Christian Acosta was the one on call to help us out. He was knowledgeable, kind, super patient with our very curious child, and did absolutely everything in his power to get our AC back on. Unfortunately the blower motor was toast. He got us set up with a window unit for the time being and. Fast forward to today, Wednesday, and Christian and Ian came to install a new blower motor for us. Both gentleman were wonderful! They kept us informed of the process and what to expect as they replaced the parts. Our house is already cooling back down and I have Christian and Ian to thank for that! They did inform us of a military discount, which was very helpful, and they insured the entire process was as streamlined as it could be. If we ever need assistance in the future, I will be calling and asking for Christian and Ian because I know they will ensure that our HVAC system has been treated with the highest quality of service. Jerry also noticed our water pressure was low after flushing toilet then trying to wash hands in bathroom sink which were so he suggested a new pressure regulator as we have had a new better water conditioning system installed. We now have the best water pressure even when using a shower and kitchen sink faucet at the same time. Also Jerry is a master plumber and we appreciate his knowledge and experience. Will definitely call Goettl again when a plumber is needed.
