What Causes Fan Motor Problems with My AC?

Fixing fan motor problems is a common repair we have to make.
Air conditioners use two fans: a blower fan inside, and a fan in the outdoor unit that helps with releasing hot air to the outside. Problems with the motors that run either fan will disrupt the heat exchange cycle necessary for your AC to work properly. One of the main reasons a fan motor might malfunction is dirt inside the cabinet. The air filter normally protects the AC interior from debris, but if it becomes clogged or breaks, pollutants forming inside can damage the motors and make them run less efficiently.
Like any motor, an air conditioner fan motor can become overheated if it works too hard and doesn’t receive proper maintenance. If your AC has worked for you most of the summer, the stress could cause the fan motors to burn out. We recommend scheduling regular maintenance, once or twice annually, to keep the motors in good condition so they last for many years.
If a fan motor isn’t starting at all, the trouble may not be in the motor itself, but the start capacitor. This cylindrical device, about the size of a soda can, sends the voltage to the motors that starts them working. Damaged wiring can cause a capacitor to fail, and the motor will not be able to start.

Had Andrew come out to remove garbage disposal and repipe sink. He also swapped out 13 emergency water shut off valves in 3 bathrooms.
Andrew was professional, courteous and expedient. He did have to run out to get some supplies. He stayed until 7pm to complete the job on one trip.
May 2023 update. Technician Steve came today to do the summer rejuvenation. Friendly and professional tech. Explained the process and findings. Both systems are new, so everything checked out good. Did a god cleaning of coils and now all set for the summer season. Had them out for fall prevention service and to review the systems that are here. I just bought the house and needed to understand what was in place.
The service tech, Kevin was very knowledgeable, friendly and professional. He explained and provided photos and video of all components. He ensured keeping house clean and wore booties.
My second unit is not in the best shape, and Kevin explained each of the issues. I will follow up with service managér to determine next steps (repair or replacement).
I signed up for there service plan and am very pleased with the service and communication to date

Scheduled so as to get current rebates.

After having a brand new unit less than 1 year it wasn't cooling. Had 3 different technicians, 3 different times make a trip out to see what was going on. Not one of them could find anything wrong. Told me keep doors open for better air flow and a couple different options. Still not working, I had to call a different company because I was tired of it getting hot in the house. It took them 1 visit to find it was the reverse valve all along. Tried to get compensation for their techs not fixing or even checking that part. Was told no due to lack of maintenance. Lol. Jef came to our house to diagnose why our 22 year-old furnace wouldn't run correctly. He was very courteous and willing to answer my questions with as much detail as I wanted. I never felt like he was trying to sell me more than was needed to get the furnace running again. He explained, with pictures of our furnace's components, what he found when he inspected it. It simply needed a cleaning and routine service which fortunately was not a huge expense.

I requested a plumbing drain inspection from Goettl. Service rep arrived introduced him self and went quickly to work. He was courteous and polite. He proceeded to inspect my plumbing and Drains. Shortly after he visited my hot water room he requested be to accompany him to observe there was a stream of water coming out of thr drain pan. He reviewed with me some of the items associated with my current installation that might be best updated and replaced. He gave me an estimate and we should. Michael did a great job for us today. Our sewage line was completely blocked by roots. He showed me with the camera and educated me on what was happening to our old iron cast line. He knew what he was doing, the what, the why is this happening. This is going to be a major project having to replace the entire line and he informed me on how this process works and the time and effort and safety it takes to replace a line. We ordered a new refrigerator from Lowe’s. When they delivered it, they said they could not install the water line. We were not familiar with plumbers so we asked our neighbor who did the plumbing in his new shower. He said Goettl and he was very happy with the results. I called them they sent out a wonderful servicemen, Gerardo Gonzalez. The builders had used 3/8” pipes and Lowe’s seemed to only have 1/4” connectors. Gerardo solved our problem and we had to get Lowe’s out again the next day to finish the install. We highly recommend Goettl and appreciate the caliber of their staff!

Installation day was when they said it would be. They scheduled the building permit, attended the inspection, and it was on time. We called on a Saturday and thankfully Christian Acosta was the one on call to help us out. Thank you Jerry for two plumbing jobs well done. Jerry cleaned out pipes from bathroom sink which were draining slowly. Jerry showed before and after pictures from his camera and what a big difference. Sink draining much better now.
Jerry also noticed our water pressure was low after flushing toilet then trying to wash hands in bathroom sink which were so he suggested a new pressure regulator as we have had a new better water conditioning system installed. We now have the best water pressure even when using a shower and kitchen sink faucet at the same time. Also Jerry is a master plumber and we appreciate his knowledge and experience. Will definitely call Goettl again when a plumber is needed.

Company sent us Stanley to help with a water line for our refrigerator. It was a pricey fix and I respected Stanley more for being situationally aware that my wife and I needed to talk in private. Russ Sapp came yesterday 8/18/25. He was prompt, very courteous, explained what he was doing with taking pictures of our AC unit and what areas of the AC unit needed attention. He didn’t rush. He had a sense of humor as I said to him “I take it Sadie approved of you?” I took that from the commercials saying if Sadie doesn’t like the person, they’re not hired. I’d ask for Russ again. We have had Goettl of Tucson service for about a year and thank goodness we had them to call when our AC failed and had a condensation leak in the attic . Goettl sent ROBERT out right away. He did a thorough inspection and informed us of what we already felt we needed to do with our old system. He sat down with me and went through the pros and cons of repairing the old vs replacement. He explained everything about a new Goettl system. Bobby Smith is great at explaining the options I have with my AC and Heater. He also let me know about the maintenance plan which is going to be great for me so I can always keep up to date with the AC and the heater. Also I didn't know that you did plumbing and he said I could get plumbing work done too so I am going to do that right away. I liked the photos that were taken to explain the situation on where I am at with the unit. All in all it was the best technician experience I have had since becoming a home owner in 2010. I would highly recommend Geottl and Bobby to anyone because of getting things right the first time, going out of his way to help, following up and keeping promises, and great product and technical knowledge. I'm not super informed on my home machines so it is comforting to be in good hands.
