AC FAQ: What’s Up with These Hot Spots?

For those of us that have made Arizona our home, high temperatures are a part of daily life. Just because we choose to live in this climate, of course, does not mean that we are immune to the discomfort that the heat can cause. Even those of us that can appreciate the heat of summer the most need to be able to keep cool and healthy. That is why running into trouble with our air conditioning systems is so alarming in this area.

Remember, an air conditioner does not — and really should not — need to break down entirely before the homeowner takes the initiative to schedule service. Typically, there are several warning factors that can warn of trouble brewing with an air conditioner. Sometimes, though, such symptoms may not be a result of a malfunctioning air conditioner itself. Following are some reasons why you may encounter hot spots in your home, and what that may mean for your air conditioner in Chandler, AZ.

Insufficient Insulation

Like we said, not every problem leading to hot spots in your home is necessarily the result of an issue with your air conditioner itself. One of the most common culprits is, in fact, the insulation in homes. Insulation is not only there to keep heat from getting out of your house in the winter. If it were, we wouldn’t have much to worry about! It also serves to prevent heat from getting into your home during the summer season. If there is not enough insulation in any given area of your home, then you’ll suffer unwanted heat transfer.

Improper Sizing

This is a much more serious problem, and one that stems directly from the air conditioner. If your system has always struggled to cool your home evenly since its installation, then it is very possible that this system is just not of the right size for your home. If this is the case, then you are going to need to replace the system with a properly sized one if you really want to solve the issue.

Damaged Ductwork

If you use a central air conditioner or a heat pump in order to cool your home, then you rely on ductwork in order to distribute cooled air throughout your living space. Your air conditioning may be cooling air sufficiently for your entire house, but that is not going to matter much if the ductwork used to distribute that cooled air throughout the house is not able to do so successfully. Sealing your ductwork or, if necessary, replacing it can help to eliminate uneven temperatures if this is the case.

When you have hot spots in your home, that is just one symptom of the problem. Another is increased cooling costs, probably, as your system struggles to even temperatures out in an uphill battle. There is also the wear and tear on your system to consider, which can result in AC repair needs. We had Mike H install a whole new water heater, pressure valve regulator, and new washer hoses. Initially, the visit was for a free full house plumbing check that comes free w/our membership, and we suspected our water heater was having issues so it was helpful to have Mike come out and check. He checked our water heater last, and, unfortunately, our suspicions were correct. Our water heater needed to be replaced b/c it was old. Mike explained to us the issues it was experiencing, and the too high pressure level our water was at. He made it clear the urgency needed in replacing the water heater and lowering the water pressure level, but he never made us feel pressured to make any decisions right then and there w/him, which we appreciated. However, we still decided in the moment to move forward w/Mike at Goettl b/c we had such a great experience w/Goettl HVAC during the summer, so we trusted him and his recommendations. Thankfully, Mike was able to tackle the biggest problem that same day and at that moment — the water pressure level. He made us feel like a priority and that our peace of mind, finances, and home mattered. We were able to get in just a couple of business days later for the whole water heater revamp. Day of water heater installation, Mike showed up on time, early, and completed the work in just a few hours. It was impressive. He left the work area clean, debris free, and his final work looks amazing. Gustavo was a wonderful technician. The window was 1pm - 5pm and he was thoughtful enough to contact me to tell me he would be arriving closer to 4pm in order for me to be able to run my errands and make calls,etc. He is the 1st tech ever to be so considerate.He explained what year the inside unit was and the year of the outside unit being 10 years old and that the compressor needed to be replaced and the approximate cost. Camren came out to check the water heater and softener, because we had another company out to check them and they said everything needed to be replaced. He checked everything and found that the water heater was still under warranty, but is still working. The softener was unplugged and had the wrong salt in it. Instead of paying thousands of dollars to replace perfectly good units, he cleaned and serviced the softener! The price was reasonable and far less than the other company quoted.

We were having issues with our furnace not igniting and having the heat remain running. We contacted Goettl Air Conditioning and Plumbing for their service. We had Geo come out on a Saturday in the afternoon so to a water heater issue. He showed up in good time and was able to identify the problem. He gave us a couple of different options to fix or replace the unit with no pressure on us. We decided to get a new water heater installed and he was able to do it the same day. Jef came to our house to diagnose why our 22 year-old furnace wouldn't run correctly. He was very courteous and willing to answer my questions with as much detail as I wanted. I never felt like he was trying to sell me more than was needed to get the furnace running again. He explained, with pictures of our furnace's components, what he found when he inspected it. It simply needed a cleaning and routine service which fortunately was not a huge expense.
He explained, while he saw no immediate problems. what we might expect going forward, given the furnace's age and condition. After I asked about major component vs. whole-unit replacement, he provided a thorough explanation, and pricing, of options for us to consider.

I requested a plumbing drain inspection from Goettl. Service rep arrived introduced him self and went quickly to work. He was courteous and polite. He proceeded to inspect my plumbing and Drains. Shortly after he visited my hot water room he requested be to accompany him to observe there was a stream of water coming out of thr drain pan. He reviewed with me some of the items associated with my current installation that might be best updated and replaced. He gave me an estimate and we should. Hands and he proceeded to remove and replace my hot water heater. The job was completed and tested tan a timely manner and he left the area in a clean and organized manner. We ordered a new refrigerator from Lowe’s. When they delivered it, they said they could not install the water line. We were not familiar with plumbers so we asked our neighbor who did the plumbing in his new shower. He said Goettl and he was very happy with the results. I called them they sent out a wonderful servicemen, Gerardo Gonzalez. The builders had used 3/8” pipes and Lowe’s seemed to only have 1/4” connectors. Gerardo solved our problem and we had to get Lowe’s out again the next day to finish the install. We highly recommend Goettl and appreciate the caliber of their staff!

This is how a service/install company should work. Price was exactly as quoted and was very fair, comparing to multiple others. They never tried to add on extras like all the others did. Installation day was when they said it would be. They scheduled the building permit, attended the inspection, and it was on time. We have been Sadi club members for years. The service is excellent from the customer service representatives that answer the phone to the individual technicians that come out to your home. Two years ago we replaced our AC unit and went with a Goettl installation after years of having them maintain our older unit.
This past week our service technician was Andrew Morgan and he is such a friendly, knowledgeable, and skilled technician. He spent time making sure the job was done correctly and he explained it in terms that I could understand. We called on a Saturday and thankfully Christian Acosta was the one on call to help us out. He was knowledgeable, kind, super patient with our very curious child, and did absolutely everything in his power to get our AC back on. Unfortunately the blower motor was toast. He got us set up with a window unit for the time being and. Fast forward to today, Wednesday, and Christian and Ian came to install a new blower motor for us. Both gentleman were wonderful! They kept us informed of the process and what to expect as they replaced the parts. Our house is already cooling back down and I have Christian and Ian to thank for that! They did inform us of a military discount, which was very helpful, and they insured the entire process was as streamlined as it could be. If we ever need assistance in the future, I will be calling and asking for Christian and Ian because I know they will ensure that our HVAC system has been treated with the highest quality of service. Thank you Jerry for two plumbing jobs well done. Jerry cleaned out pipes from bathroom sink which were draining slowly. Jerry showed before and after pictures from his camera and what a big difference. Sink draining much better now.
Jerry also noticed our water pressure was low after flushing toilet then trying to wash hands in bathroom sink which were so he suggested a new pressure regulator as we have had a new better water conditioning system installed. We now have the best water pressure even when using a shower and kitchen sink faucet at the same time. Also Jerry is a master plumber and we appreciate his knowledge and experience. Will definitely call Goettl again when a plumber is needed.
