A Heat Pump Is a Year-Round Comfort Solution
You read that right above—we said heating and cooling. The reason that a heat pump is such a great option in our climate is that it is a powerful home cooling system, with the added benefit of also being an incredibly efficient heater. The only drawback generally associated with heat pumps is that they can sometimes lose energy efficiency or be overwhelmed when faced with extreme cold. However, that is something that we simply do not really have to deal with in this part of the country.
The heat pump, in its cooling mode, will act more or less exactly the way that a central air conditioner does. That is to say that it evaporates refrigerant in the indoor evaporator coil, which allows it to absorb heat from the air in your home. Then, the heat pump transfers that refrigerant out to the outdoor unit, where it is condensed in the condenser coil. This allows it to release that heat into the air outside.
Enter: The Reversing Valve!
A component called the reversing valve is used to reverse the operation of the heat pump, flipping the operation of the coils and the flow of the refrigerant. When you need to heat your home, the refrigerant evaporates in the outdoor unit. It is then compressed before being condensed in the indoor coil.
That allows you to use its thermal energy to heat your home, and that means that don’t have to generate new heat in order to do so. This method of heat transfer is precisely what makes the heat pump such an effective heating system. While heat pumps are all-electric units, they do not rely on electric resistance to create new heat, so they are more affordable to run than, say, an electric furnace.
