What Is Involved in Air Cleaner Maintenance?
Having air cleaners installed in your home is a superb way to help improve your indoor air quality without having to open up your home’s windows and doors during a roasting hot Arizona day. There are a variety of filters, such as HEPA mechanical filters and electronic filters, that can deal with most of the particles that infiltrate through your HVAC system.
But just as your air conditioner and heater require regular maintenance (you do have regular maintenance for them, don’t you?), so do your air filters. The job of filters, whether electronic or mechanical, is to trap pollutants among their fibers. Those pollutants don’t go anywhere else—they will need to be removed routinely from the filter before the filter becomes ineffectual and impedes the airflow through your ventilation system.
Contact Goettl Good Guys Air Conditioning to help install your air cleaners in Catalina, AZ. But even if someone else did the work, you can rely on us to provide you with the proper maintenance to keep your filters doing their job protecting your indoor air quality.
Air Cleaner Maintenance
All air cleaners must eventually be replaced after a few years (electronic filters last longer on average), and part of regular maintenance is the technician determining if your filter needs to be swapped out.
If the filter is still in good shape, however, the technician will take care of cleaning the unit. The unit must first be removed from its position inside the ventilation system. The technician will then use a special power vacuum to suction up the dust, dirt, and other contaminants trapped in the filters. Just an ordinary vacuum or a cloth will not do the job, since the filter is designed to hold on to particles, and many will be buried deep within the mat of fibers.
If the filter needs further cleaning, the technician will use water pressure. It’s important that water pressure channeled through a filter goes the right direction (the opposite direction of the air flow) so that the water pressure will not push the contaminants deeper into the fibers.
Can I Maintain The Filters Myself?
You probably shouldn’t, but there’s nothing wrong with you checking to see if the filter has become dirty enough that it’s time to call for maintenance. With a regular schedule for maintenance, you shouldn’t even have to worry about this (unless you detect a drop in the airflow from the vents, which often indicates a clogged filter). Especially when dealing with electronic air filters, leave the work to an HVAC specialist.
