What Is Zone Control?
Understanding how zone control works is the first step toward understanding the benefits it can offer. Zone control systems utilize a series of motorized dampers that are installed into the supply vents of your ductwork. These dampers are controlled by thermostats or a main control panel. Zones are designated by you. If more cooling is needed for a zone, the damper opens; if less is needed, it closes. Each zone maintains its own temperature, allowing you to cool as needed.
What Does Installation Involve?
There are three key components that are added to your system for zone control:
- Motorized dampers
- Control panel
Installation involves the ductwork of your HVAC system, so the power to your AC needs to be turned off completely before work can begin. Once the power is off, the technician will access your ductwork and start the installation.
What Are the Benefits of a Zone Control System
There are several important benefits a zone control system can offer:
- Increased energy efficiency – the level of control you attain with a zone control system allows you to cool only what you need to; as such, less energy is used, thus increasing your energy efficiency.
- Customized comfort – there’s no need to fight over the thermostat anymore, as each zone can be set to its own temperature.
- Less wear on your AC – needing less cooling means less operation for your AC. This can reduce the rate of wear on the system.
It usually takes less than a day to install a zone control system, but the benefits of one can last for years.
