A dual fuel air conditioning system is unique in that it is capable of both heating and cooling one’s home. The system actually functions much like a heat pump, meaning that it will operate as a central cooling system in the summer, drawing heat out of the air in your home and venting it outdoors. However, during the cooler time of the year, the system is capable of reversing its operation, meaning that it can actually use existing heat in the air outside in order to heat your home efficiently, using only a small amount of electricity in the heat transfer process.
However, in the event that your system is not able to effectively heat your home using this method, should the temperature drop too low to make it a viable option, a dual fuel AC system also features a backup heater to pick up the slack. Generally, a gas furnace will fill this role. When the system is overwhelmed, the furnace will come on until the heat tranfer process is once again sufficient for heating your living space. When it is, the switch back to that method is made automatically.
