We perform many fixes for air conditioners at this time of year, and here are the ones we see the most often. Take note of them in case you start to experience similar trouble:
Replacing clogged air filters: You should change your air filter once a month during times when you frequently use your AC (in other words, most of the year in Arizona). A filter that becomes heavily clogged because it’s been left in place all summer can become a major problem, causing damage to the inside of the AC cabinet and letting dust gather in the ducts and in your home. A duct that has become extremely clogged often needs professionals to take care of it and any other troubles it might have caused.
Recharging refrigerant: Refrigerant is the chemical mixture that carries out the heat exchange that cools down your home. Under normal operation, the refrigerant’s “charge” (the level inside the system) doesn’t drop. However, extensive wear on an AC can cause leaks to develop, and this will cause your air conditioner to lose its cooling power. You’ll need a technician to seal the leak and recharge the refrigerant to its normal level.
Cleaning condensate drains: As your air conditioner cools your home, the refrigerant goes through a process of condensation and evaporation. This produces excess water moisture, which drips into a pan where a drain removes it. Over the summer, the drain can become blocked with biological growth or other debris—which will rapidly cause the condensate pan to overflow. Repairs involve removing the condensate pan and cleaning, or even replacing, the drain.
