Weird Furnace Noises You Should Listen for

Thursday, March 30th, 2017

Furnaces make all kinds of noises during operation. You’re probably familiar with the kinds of noises that your furnace tends to make. However, some furnace noises can indicate a problem with the system. If your furnace starts to make unusual noises, you should call for repairs as soon as possible. Let’s take a look at some common furnace noises that indicate repair needs.

Booming

If your furnace sounds like a cannon firing when it starts up, it probably means that you have a dirty burner assembly. Carbon particles build up on the furnace burner assembly over time, eventually clogging the jets and causing them to fire later than they should. When the jets finally do ignite, they burn through a lot of excess gas and cause a deep booming sound. Having the burner assembly cleaned should fix the problem. Best to do it quickly, though, as the longer the particles buildup the more likely it is that they will completely clog the assembly.

Grinding

Furnaces use air handlers to move air around the house. The air handler is essentially a large motor with a fan attached to it. The fan uses oiled bearings to cope with the friction generated during operation. These bearings wear down over time, however, which produces a loud grinding sound. If the bearings are not replaced in time, the air handler motor will overheat and burn out. Call for repairs as soon as you hear this sound coming from your furnace. It is far cheaper to replace worn out bearings than it is to replace a burned out air handler motor.

If your furnace is making any kind of strange noise, call Goettl Good Guys Air Conditioning. We offer a full range of furnace repair services.

Do I Need Furnace Repairs?

Thursday, March 30th, 2017

Because we live in such a warm climate, a broken down heater may not elicit the same level concern as a broken down air conditioning system. As anyone that has lived here for a while can tell you, though, even our arid climate is not immune to the chill of winter. If your furnace needs repairs, then you definitely want to have them completed promptly.

Of course, in order to do so, you must ensure that you are able to recognize the signs of trouble that your furnace may exhibit. Here are a few tips to help you do so. Contact us the moment that you notice any of these issues in your home.

Strange Sounds

Now, a furnace is a forced air heating system. A forced air heater is not going to operate completely silently. There is a big difference between normal operating sounds, however, and alarming new noises.

A gentle whoosh as the system cycles on and starts distributing air is normal. Screeching, clanging, banging, or grinding sounds are not. Don’t ignore them just because the heater is still running – for now.

Odd Odors

When you run your furnace, you shouldn’t smell burning. It is very possible that you’ll smell a bit of burning when you first turn the furnace on for the season, as dust may be built up on the burners or electric heating elements. However, it should go away quickly.

If you continue to smell burning, or if you ever smell gas, schedule repairs immediately. You cannot put your comfort at risk by ignoring such problems. Dial our number when your nose puts you on alert.

Creeping Costs

Are your heating bills creeping higher and higher? You will see some fluctuation, obviously, based on how much you run your heater. However, you shouldn’t see big spikes with no clear cause.

If your bills seem like they’re getting a bit out of hand, just let us know. Your system may be getting old enough that efficiency is just starting to slip. It may be the result of a problem with a solution, though.
